The Ctrl+P shortcut sends a direct command to the operating system to open the print dialog. When this key combination no longer produces any result, the problem rarely lies with the keyboard itself. The failure most often comes from a blocked system service, a software conflict, or a setting changed after an update.
The Windows Print Spooler: the first service to check
The Print Spooler service manages the queue of all jobs sent to a printer. When this service crashes or does not start, no shortcut or print command can succeed. The system receives the request, but no one processes it.

Printing issue on Mac: the same shortcut, different causes
On macOS, the Cmd+P shortcut serves the same function as Ctrl+P on Windows. When it stops responding, the causes differ significantly.
The printing system of macOS relies on CUPS (Common Unix Printing System). A blocked queue can be resolved by opening System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, then removing the affected printer before re-adding it. This action forces the system to recreate the connection from scratch.
If Cmd+P does not respond in any application, check that the shortcut has not been reassigned. macOS allows you to modify any keyboard shortcut via System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts. A custom shortcut can override the print command without any error message appearing.
Check the printer driver and network connection
An inactive print shortcut sometimes masks a driver issue. The dialog opens but closes instantly, giving the impression that the shortcut is not working.
